Former Atlassian and Canva staffer, Rhiannon Ward, left the self-admitted pinnacle of her career to “jump off a cliff” and pursue her ‘own thing’, describing it the most challenging, yet easiest, decision she’d ever made.
Ward was formerly the Senior Executive Assistant at both of Australia’s billion-dollar technology darlings, Atlassian and Canva respectively, before deciding to give up the esteemed positions in pursuit of her own business venture.
Today, Ms Ward runs a five-figure per month business as a renowned success and mindset coach, empowering others to ditch self-doubt, limiting beliefs and create an extraordinary life – delivered in her signature infectious style.
Speaking to AESTOLOGYY Ward offers advice to others who could resonate with a similar pull to leave highly-coveted ‘dream roles’ and run their own ship.
“My greatest accomplishment is that I was able to build a five-figure per month business really quickly in a way that feels really good to me – I work less, am more fulfilled, and have been able to create a life I absolutely love whilst helping others do the same.”
“For anyone that is doubting themselves – because they are in a revered job position – remember that your dreams don’t need to make sense to anyone but you.”
No ‘flashing lights’
Ward claims the process of knowing she should leave her dream job was not an instant revelation, rather a gradual series of fleeting thoughts.
“I wish I could say that I woke up one morning and clear as day, the sign was there and the decision was made.”
“There were no red flashing lights or big, bold, impulsive decisions.”
“The truth is that one day, a fleeting thought crossed my mind – it was subtle and I dismissed it pretty quickly. Then, day after day, it would bubble up again; still subtle, but each time I was finding it harder to shake.”
After several weeks, Ward says she was hit with a “somewhat morbid moment” and considered the uncertainty of her time on Earth before asking herself: “if I don’t do this now, when will I?”
“Go back to how you feel, and not what you think – your mind will try to stop you!”

Pulling the trigger
Ms Ward says the decision to “pull the trigger” came not long after her morbid inflection, recognising the longer she waited, the higher the probability she’d back out and opt to “play it safe.”
“It felt like jumping off a cliff and it was the most challenging decision I have ever made, and yet somehow also the
Ward emphasises the importance of following personal intuition to those seeking a transition out of the traditional business world. Looking back, she says leaving was “by far the best thing I have ever done.”
“If you feel restless, stuck, angsty or flat, there is a good chance you aren’t feeling fulfilled in the work that you are doing. Your intuition knows exactly where to take you – that beautiful mix of nervousness and excitement is a great indication that you are ready to take the leap”
